This year, Emilia Romagna, especially the city of Ravenna, is commemorating the 700th anniversary of the death of the country’s greatest poet: Dante Alighieri. In anticipation of this significant occasion, there are a number of Dante-related openings and exhibitions scheduled throughout the year.

The renovated Dante Museum

The Dante Museum, originally opened in honor of the 600th anniversary commemorations in 1921, open to the public this Sunday, May 16th.

The primary aim of these renovations was to create an innovative exhibition path for national and international visitors to admire the existing heritage – including the box of bones, the wooden ark that house the skeleton and more – tied to Dante’s life through a series of themed rooms:

    • Time, which introduces visitors to Dante’s life and work;

    • The Face, dealing with the theme of the physical description of the poet;

    • Monteverde Room, a preserved restaurant from 1921 that takes its name from the Italian emigrants from Montevideo and by the Dante Alighieri Society of the Uruguayan capital who participated in the celebrations for the sixth centenary of Dante’s death;

    • Room of Worship, exhibiting objects from the municipal collection;

    • Room of Fame, a video room exploring Dante’s popular fortune and the success of his work, beginning in the fourteenth century through to the present day;

    • Three Rooms of the Comedy, which present a journey through the three canticles of the Divine Comedy.
