Emilia-Romagna has a heart made of photography. The great photographers, if they weren’t born in this region, have almost certainly documented and interpreted it.

Like Ferdinando Scianna. Indeed, it is he, with the shots he took for Dolce & Gabbana’s 1988 spring collection, who is the protagonist of the exhibition SOLO LA MAGLIA. The textile tradition in Carpi in the photographs of Ferdinando Scianna, at the Musei di Palazzo dei Pio in Carpi (16 September 2022 – 30 January 2023).

The exhibition celebrates weaving and documents, thanks to two works by Ferdinando Scianna from the late 70s, the story of a production of excellence that since the seventies has seen a solid presence of companies in the Carpi District that have become a point of reference for the main Italian labels.

Between photography and fashion

The exhibition shows eleven original prints by Ferdinando Scianna accompanying 26 images from the photographic campaign book, made spring 1988 collection by Dolce & Gabbana. On this occasion, for the first time, garments in jersey (a fabric created by some companies in the Carpi District) paraded on their catwalk.

Ten original Dolce & Gabbana clothing will be on display, too. Also on show, 14 photographs Scianna shot for the Associazione Magliacalze: they were included in the volume Maglia (1989, Franco Sciardelli publisher). It was a sort of reportage, taken in the factories of the Carpi district, documenting the production and marketing processes of knitting.

The exhibition also includes an installation, produced in collaboration with Dondi Jersey and dedicated to sustainability.

SOLO LA MAGLIA. The textile tradition in Carpi in the photographs of Ferdinando Scianna, curated by Manuela Rossi and Luca Panaro, is conceived and produced by the Municipality of Carpi – Musei di Palazzo dei Pio, in collaboration with Dondi Jersey.
The initiative is part of the programme of the festivalfilosofia 2022 Giustizia, which will be held in Modena, Carpi and Sassuolo (16 to 18 September 2022).
