Illegitimate daughter of Galeazzo Sforza, Duke of Milan, she was raised in a sophisticated court and, since her early youth, she was first noticed because of <strong>her audacity<\/strong>, and later because of the impetuous actions she took to safeguard her possessions from usurpers and to uphold the military defence of her states.&#13;<br \/>\nDue to her truly eclectic character in her private life Caterina was devoted to various activities, she was an expert in <strong>herbal alchemy<\/strong>, about which she wrote a treatise\u00a0and she loved hunting and dancing.&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/>\nWe can begin our journey with a sweet start: each year on the <strong>25th\u00a0of November<\/strong> people in Forl\u00ec celebrate the Feast of Saint Catherine (from Alexandria of Egypt) with the Nougat Festival. The special event is held in\u00a0front of the Church of San Biagio where nougat is given to all \u201cbeautiful girls and women\u201d. The origin of this folk tradition appears to be closely connected with the history of Caterina Sforza: it seems that on entering for the occasion\u00a0the Church of San Biagio, she was given a piece of nougat by an unknown man, who wanted through this gesture to pay tribute to her beauty.&#13;<br \/>\nBut sweetness was not the first feature of her character.&#13;<br \/>\n<strong>Let\u2019s have a look at where Caterina, since 1484, has left a mark<\/strong>.&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/>\nIn <a href=\"https:\/\/www.travelemiliaromagna.it\/en\/forli-3-minutes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Forl\u00ec<\/a> the <strong>Rocca di Ravaldino<\/strong> served as a defensive fortress and represented one of the most suited places to protect the city throughout the centuries, it was restored and modified on Caterina\u2019s wish.&#13;<br \/>\nToday it hosts exhibitions and events.&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9976 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travelemiliaromagna.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Rocca_di_Ravaldino_Photo-3.jpg\" alt=\"Fortress of Ravaldino\" width=\"1200\" height=\"661\" \/>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/>\nThe <strong>Rocca Sforzesca<\/strong> in <a href=\"http:\/\/visitareimola.it\/eng\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Imola<\/a>, a splendid example of fortified architecture, was built in the 13th century as a defensive rampart on the side of the city facing Bologna. Modified at the end of the 15th century on the basis of plans conceived by the Sforza family, the fortress maintained its military function.&#13;<br \/>\nWorth visiting for its collections of weapons and ceramics, or even just for the wonderful view of the city from the towers; it also hosts events and shows in its internal courtyard in the summer months.&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/>\nThe Medieval Village of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.travelemiliaromagna.it\/en\/emilia-romagna-villages-dozza\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dozza<\/a> is situated on the crest of a gentle hill dominating the Sellustra river\u00a0valley.&#13;<br \/>\nThe <strong>Rocca of Dozza<\/strong>, turned into a fortress following the wishes of Caterina Sforza, original paintings and furniture have been preserved since than.&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-10525 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travelemiliaromagna.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/pbo2015dozzarocca_di_dozzaw7853simona_buccolieri.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1204\" height=\"800\" \/>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/>\nCaterina owned also the beautiful <strong>Rocca in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forlimpopolicittartusiana.it\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Forlimpopoli<\/a><\/strong> but she lost it.&#13;<br \/>\nCaterina\u2019s seigniory ended in 1499, when Cesare Borgia, son of Pope Alexander VI and brother of Lucrezia Borgia&#8230;but that\u2019s a different story.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;The great lady of Romagna&#8221;, Caterina Sforza, was one of the most representative characters of the Italian Renaissance.
