It&#8217;s not completely unrelated that one of my favourite childhood reading was <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Journey_to_the_Center_of_the_Earth\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Journey to the centre of the Earth by Jules Verne<\/em><\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>If you could only imagine how often I have been fantasizing about following Prof. Lindenbrock and his explorers in a journey to the depth of the planet. An extraordinary world including kms of tunnels, also more than 200m deep, streams of water, wells, unbelievable human traces and ancient fossils dating back to 5 million years ago, which were recognised <a href=\"https:\/\/whc.unesco.org\/en\/list\/1692\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">as UNESCO World Heritage Sites<\/a> in 2023 for their uniqueness and representativeness of the Earth&#8217;s geological and geomorphological evolution.<\/p>\n<p>And now, put warm clothes and trekking shoes on and get ready for an adventure!<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"title-evidenza\">Grotta del Re Tiberio<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Starting point<\/strong>: Via Firenze, Borgo Rivola at Cava di Monte Tondo (Riolo Terme, Ravenna)<br \/>\n<strong>Duration<\/strong>: 1h30&#8242;<br \/>\n<strong>Difficulty<\/strong>: medium<br \/>\n<strong>Length<\/strong>: 600m + 60m within the cave<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_52476\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-52476\" style=\"width: 1440px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-52476\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travelemiliaromagna.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/retiberio2.jpg\" alt=\"Riolo Terme (Ravenna), Grotta del Re Tiberio\" width=\"1440\" height=\"809\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.travelemiliaromagna.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/retiberio2.jpg 1440w, https:\/\/www.travelemiliaromagna.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/retiberio2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.travelemiliaromagna.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/retiberio2-1024x575.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.travelemiliaromagna.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/retiberio2-768x431.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1440px) 100vw, 1440px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-52476\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Riolo Terme (Ravenna), Grotta del Re Tiberio<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p lang=\"en-GB\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.parchiromagna.it\/parco.vena.gesso.romagnola\/Epun_dettaglio.php?id=1629\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Grotta del Re Tiberio<\/strong><\/a> is located in the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/emiliaromagnaturismo.it\/en\/nature-outdoor\/natural-parks\/gypsum-vein-of-romagna-regional-park\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gypsum Vein of Romagna Regional Park<\/a><\/strong>, in the territory of Riolo Terme (Province of Ravenna).<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s the last part of a system of natural tunnels on different levels, that formed because of the draining waters flowing from Monte Tondo &#8211; 6km of tunnels and a difference of 223m.<\/p>\n<p>It owes its name to <strong>Emperor Tiberius<\/strong> who allegedly found refuge here, with no success, to escape the fate and avoid dying hit by a thunder. Furthermore, on the inside, archaeological researches carried out in the XX century brought to light <strong>remarkable finds<\/strong>, some of them dating back to the Copper Age, that contributed to trace the prehistoric settlements of the entire region.<\/p>\n<p>Visits, upon reservation and subject to admission, are possible all year round except in winter, to preserve the quiet of the bat&#8217;s hibernation. I suggest you bring rubber boots (boots in general) with you, together with a waterproof suit. The fascinating tour, suitable for children and adults alike, stretches among <strong>crystals on the ceiling<\/strong>, that light up with the lamps, small bats flying around and finally, in the deepest space of the cave, the silent voice of Earth.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-GB\">Visits to the cave are organized from March to November, only upon reservation, and are led by authorized speleologists of the Regional Park Gessi Bolognesi. Among the caves, the Sala Quarina is worth a mention.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-GB\">Also known as Sala dei Mammelloni, conic gypsum protuberances are hanging from the ceiling and seem to be the biggest of Europe.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-GB\">But the real landlords are the remarkable <strong>bat colonies<\/strong>: 6 different species that inhabit the underground environment. The path, partly paved and partly on natural ground, is properly ventilated and the average temperature is 12\u00b0-13\u00b0C.
