{"id":42817,"date":"2018-01-19T11:24:00","date_gmt":"2018-01-19T10:24:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.travelemiliaromagna.it\/superstitions-emilia-romagna\/"},"modified":"2023-11-10T12:48:44","modified_gmt":"2023-11-10T11:48:44","slug":"superstitions-in-emilia-romagna","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.travelemiliaromagna.it\/en\/superstitions-in-emilia-romagna\/","title":{"rendered":"Superstitions in Emilia-Romagna"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Every region of Italy is home to plenty of myths, legends, and traditions, many of which have their roots in old times.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Emilia-Romagna has its own rituals too<\/strong>, and deep in its culture it guards myths and beliefs to ward off back luck, and it is enhanced by popular stories of ghosts or mythological creatures in which love, life, and death are central.<\/p>\n<p>Imagine a big pot containing all the traditions \u2013 or better \u2013 all the existing rituals and beliefs: every folk gleans from this pot to add value to its own existence and to create a tighter sense of belonging between the single individuals and the collectivity.<\/p>\n<p>These rituals are very often linked to a specific place, giving it an emotional profile that is still existing today, and if we are curious enough, we can discover them.<\/p>\n<p>In this way, rituals rise around these places and tradition has passed them down over the years up to the present days.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"title-evidenza\">Under the horns<\/span><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_52801\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-52801\" style=\"width: 1500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-52801\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travelemiliaromagna.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/BECCHI-02.jpg\" alt=\"Santarcangelo di Romagna (RN), Festa di San Martino\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.travelemiliaromagna.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/BECCHI-02.jpg 1500w, https:\/\/www.travelemiliaromagna.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/BECCHI-02-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.travelemiliaromagna.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/BECCHI-02-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.travelemiliaromagna.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/BECCHI-02-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-52801\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Santarcangelo di Romagna (RN), Festa di San Martino | Credit: everydaylife.it<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>One of the most important traditional festivals of Romagna occurs on November 11th in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.travelemiliaromagna.it\/en\/santarcangelo-di-romagna-in-emilia-romagna\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Santarcangelo di Romagna<\/a><\/strong>, it\u2019s the <strong>Festa di San Martino<\/strong>, which celebrates the \u201chorned ones\u201d, i.e. all men who, for one reason or another, were betrayed by their wives.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The original and very funny ritual finds its roots in farm customs<\/strong>. In the past, it was right on the day of San Martino that landowners and sharecroppers met to ratify or renew their work contracts.<\/p>\n<p>On that occasion they exchanged tools, food provisions, and livestock: right from here the Fiera Dei Becchi (of the billy goats) originates and gives rise to the <em>\u201cFesta Dei\u00a0Cornuti\u201d<\/em>\u00a0(of the \u201chorned ones\u201d).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Every year, on that day, in the very central Piazza Ganganelli, two enormous horns hang from the Triumphal Arch of Clemente XIV<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Tradition has it that if the horns start to swing when a man passes under them, it means that this man is \u201chorned\u201d, that is, he was betrayed. Due to its age and history though, <strong>students hired over the centuries some rituals for warding off bad luck<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>First of all, to pass diagonally through Piazza Maggiore: if you don\u2019t, you might never see your graduation day!
