{"id":40570,"date":"2019-07-05T11:08:00","date_gmt":"2019-07-05T10:08:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.travelemiliaromagna.it\/reef-paguro-ravenna\/"},"modified":"2025-07-25T10:19:28","modified_gmt":"2025-07-25T09:19:28","slug":"paguro-platform-reef-ravenna","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.travelemiliaromagna.it\/en\/paguro-platform-reef-ravenna\/","title":{"rendered":"The Paguro Platform: a reef off the coasts of Ravenna"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There&#8217;s a story about a patch of coast in front of the Ravenna beache that I am sure not many people are familiar with.<\/p>\n<p>It is about a tragic affair that took place just over 50 years ago. It was 1965 when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.turismo.ra.it\/en\/nature-seaside\/natural-areas\/piattaforma-paguro\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>the Paguro methane platform<\/strong><\/a>, after a violent explosion, disappeared, swallowed up in the waters of the Adriatic Sea.<\/p>\n<p>From that moment on, the Paguro started its metamorphosis and on its structure, devastated theatre of death, little by little started new life, turning this site in <strong>one of the most important centres of marine biology in the Adriatic<\/strong>, first and only marine site to be selected as a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ambiente.regione.emilia-romagna.it\/it\/parchi-natura2000\/rete-natura-2000\/siti\/it4070026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Site of Community Importance in the Emilia Romagna region<\/a><\/strong> (2010).<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6Kzf3yofLM4\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"title-evidenza\">Let&#8217;s start from the beginning: 1963<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>12\u00b034&#8217;57&#8243;E and 44\u00b023\u20194\u201d N<\/strong>: these are the coordinates, the latitude, and longitude, where you would have found Paguro today, 11 km from the coast of Ravenna.<\/p>\n<p>In this area, between 1962 and 1963, <strong>the Paguro platform<\/strong> <strong>was launche<\/strong>d. Together with its colleague and <em>&#8220;twin&#8221;<\/em>, <strong>the Perro Negro<\/strong>, it was conceived as a moving platform of AGIP for drilling the oil well and extract gas in the waters of the Adriatic Sea.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Everything was proceeding as planned, at least until 28 September 1965<\/strong>. Moved to a new site &#8211; the PC7 (Porto Corsini 7): a dozen miles from the mouth of the rivers Fiumi Uniti, during the drilling something irreparable happened.<\/p>\n<p>At first fluid erupted, which would have been easily confinable and staunched, but almost immediately one of the walls of the oil well collapsed. As the platform had been moved, an underlying unexpected gas field containing highly pressurized gas had been damaged.<\/p>\n<p>Remedial actions would have been useless. In little time, the platform completely collapsed, in a cloud of gas and water and in a few hours an unrelenting chain effect made it sink into the sea.<\/p>\n<p>The accident claimed the lives of three Agip technicians (geologist Arturo Biagini, electrician Bernardo Gervasoni and worker Pietro Perri), creating also a crater that brought the surrounding bottom from -27 m to -33 m.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_59972\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-59972\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-59972\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travelemiliaromagna.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Paguro-1.jpg\" alt=\"Ravenna, The methane platform Paguro\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.travelemiliaromagna.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Paguro-1.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.travelemiliaromagna.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Paguro-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.travelemiliaromagna.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Paguro-1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.travelemiliaromagna.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Paguro-1-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-59972\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ravenna, The methane platform Paguro | Credit: Wikimedia<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><span class=\"title-evidenza\">The Paguro Platform, today<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>50 years later, the wreck is still there<\/strong>, but it has become something completely new, something different and unique for the Adriatic Sea.<\/p>\n<p>The sea subsumed this gigantic construction with its vital force, turning it into<strong> a new home for many animal and plant species<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In 1991, to the already lying rests have been added other metal objects coming from the dismantlement of other six Eni platforms, enlarging this big complex, which has become a reference point for all the divers and marine biology enthusiasts today.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thousands of fish species of every kind have found here their home<\/strong>, turning the spot into a hub of biodiversity and life. In the blue sea, underwater tourists might even spot the\u00a0cassiopeia jellyfish, the largest in the Mediterranean, but also come across the many red lobsters, rock lobsters and gurnards of all sizes.<\/p>\n<p>If you go deeper down, you may see enormous schools of oily fish, bogues, mackerels, pilchards, bonitos, grey mullets, European basses, corbs, greater amberjacks and even some dolphin that went there to find some food.<\/p>\n<p>On the structures covered by mussels and oysters, spinous spider crabs stand out while flirting or laying eggs; sponge crabs, millions of colourful combtooth blennies hiding behind sea urchins and bright nudibranchs.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_59974\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-59974\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-59974\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travelemiliaromagna.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/paguro_1-1.jpg\" alt=\"Ravenna, The reef of Paguro platform\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.travelemiliaromagna.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/paguro_1-1.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.travelemiliaromagna.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/paguro_1-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.travelemiliaromagna.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/paguro_1-1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.travelemiliaromagna.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/paguro_1-1-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-59974\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ravenna, The reef of Paguro platform | Credit: Ravenna Photo Archives<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Given the growing number of underwater explorers eager to admire this underwater naturalistic oasis, the <strong>Paguro Association<\/strong>\u00a0was set up in 1995 to regulate diving and safeguard the biological protection zone.<\/p>\n<p>Along with other natural and artificial reefs, the Paguro wreck is at the centre of the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/adrireef.github.io\/sandbox3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AdriReef\u00a0project<\/a><\/strong>, which has the aim of valorising the so-called \u201cblue economy\u201d and fostering research at these sites.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a target=\"_blank\" class=\"btn btn-link my-4\" href=\"https:\/\/adrireef.ubicasrl.com\/public\/tour360\/index.html\"  title=\"Explore the Paguro platform wreck\">Explore the Paguro platform wreck<\/a><\/p>\n<h4><strong><span style=\"color: #1069a3;\">Do you know&#8230;<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>&#8230; This area was paid homage with a dedicated series of &#8220;underwater&#8221; wines, the wines of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tenutadelpaguro.com\/#Affinato\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Tenuta del Paguro<\/strong><\/a>: in fact, a wine farm chose the Adriatic sea to place its wines 30 m deep in its waters for their ageing.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There&#8217;s a story about a patch of coast in front of the Ravenna beache that I am sure not many people are familiar with.
