{"id":40319,"date":"2019-11-21T14:14:00","date_gmt":"2019-11-21T13:14:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.travelemiliaromagna.it\/ideal-cities-in-emilia-romagna\/"},"modified":"2023-12-07T19:20:25","modified_gmt":"2023-12-07T18:20:25","slug":"ideal-cities-in-emilia-romagna","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.travelemiliaromagna.it\/en\/ideal-cities-in-emilia-romagna\/","title":{"rendered":"The \u2018Ideal Cities\u2019 in Emilia Romagna"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Antique world and the Middle Ages have always dreamt of building the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ideal_city\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ideal city<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 or rather theorized settlements, whose urban arrangement with its streets and palaces were based on functional and rational principles under the aegis of philosophy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It was in the Renaissance<\/strong>, though (i.e. in the second half of the 14th\u00a0century), <strong>that this quest of utopia became popular<\/strong>, especially when the cities, once overcome the Middle Ages, regained a leading role in the society and everyday life.<\/p>\n<p>Several branches strengthened this process acting together (art \u2013 in its strict sense, architecture, philosophy, urbanistic), where each of them with its peculiarities had a role in this path to perfection.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In this scenario, many new models of the city were studied<\/strong>, even if doomed to remain just a mere theory, unrealized. In the circular and polygonal shapes, orthogonal networks and radiocentric schemes were enhanced with broader perspectives through straight lines, regular squares and aligned palaces.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Emilia-Romagna, however, showed itself <\/strong>\u2013 more than other territories \u2013 <strong>able to translate this dream into real and concrete models<\/strong>, representing a sort of urbanistic try field. Many attempts of rationalization of the public spaces were conceived and partly realized with the objective of creating the \u2018Ideal City\u2019.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"title-evidenza\">The Erculean addition in Ferrara<\/span><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_78690\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-78690\" style=\"width: 1600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-78690\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travelemiliaromagna.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Ferrara-Palazzo-dei-Diamanti-sede-della-Pinacoteca-Nazionale-di-Ferrara-Ph.-FABRIZIO-CONTE-via-shutterstock.jpg\" alt=\"Ferrara, Palazzo dei Diamanti, sede della Pinacoteca Nazionale di Ferrara \" width=\"1600\" height=\"1062\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-78690\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ferrara, Palazzo dei Diamanti | Credit: Fabrizio Conte, via ShutterStock<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Towards the end of the 15th century, architect <a title=\"Biagio Rossetti\" href=\"https:\/\/biagiorossetti500.it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Biagio Rossetti<\/a> carried out <strong>one of the most famous projects of urban redevelopment<\/strong> in the amazing city of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/emiliaromagnaturismo.it\/en\/towns\/ferrara\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ferrara<\/a><\/strong>, the silent and elegant Unesco World Heritage city.<\/p>\n<p>By order of Duke Ercole d\u2019Este 1st (1471-1505), the so-called <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ferraraterraeacqua.it\/en\/discover-the-area\/routes-and-tours\/history-and-culture-routes\/the-renaissance-addition?set_language=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Erculean Addition<\/a><\/strong> was built as a real extension of the urban fabric north to the majestic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.castelloestense.it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Castello Estense<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The new district<\/strong>, which overlapped with the pre-existing historic fabric,<strong> developed around two orthogonal streets, the present-day Corso Ercole I and Corso Rossetti<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Following what was the fifteenth-century conception of the perspective view from the castle, it unraveled from here to the Estensi&#8217;s estates outside the city (in particular the Belfiore Castle).<\/p>\n<p>Rossetti, in order to give more prominence and prestige to this new urban design, decided to nestle in the crossing between all these axises the <strong><a title=\"Palazzo dei Diamanti\" href=\"http:\/\/www.palazzodiamanti.it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Palazzo dei Diamanti<\/a><\/strong> with its characteristic ashlar aspect and the top shaped like that of a diamond, which contrasted with the traditional brick-fa\u00e7ade that had been used for the buildings in Ferrara until that moment.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"title-evidenza\">The Erculean addition in Modena<\/span><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_49386\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-49386\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-49386\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travelemiliaromagna.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/modena_dallalto.jpg\" alt=\"Modena (MO), Vista panoramica della citt\u00e0\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.travelemiliaromagna.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/modena_dallalto.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.travelemiliaromagna.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/modena_dallalto-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.travelemiliaromagna.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/modena_dallalto-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.travelemiliaromagna.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/modena_dallalto-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-49386\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Modena (MO), Panoramic view over the historic center<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The humanistic influence of the Este court also touched the city of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/emiliaromagnaturismo.it\/en\/towns\/modena\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Modena<\/a><\/strong>. Around the 16th century, after a brief period under the papal rule, the city gradually returned under the control of Ferrara.<\/p>\n<p>It was precisely at this time (between 1535 and 1551) that Duke Ercole II d\u2019Este decided to carry out a <strong>major urban development<\/strong>, the so-called <strong>Erculean-or Terranova-addition<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Thus the city&#8217;s built-up area was enlarged, incorporating more or less large portions of the surrounding territory and remaking the walls in the northwest section.<\/p>\n<p>Starting from Via Terranova (today Corso Cavour), new houses were built, whereas Corso Vittorio Emanuele II was turned into an urban artery, in the centre of which was the port of the city and the city dock Naviglio.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The city centre maintained its medieval street system influenced by the canals<\/strong>. However, the noble houses, such as Palazzo Ferrari-Moreni, Palazzo Fontana, Palazzo Tacoli-Ronchetti already become Rangoni, started to lose their old fortified aspect, gaining that new beautifying Renaissance features.<\/p>\n<p>There are, though, very few examples of this 16th-century construction, almost lost with the subsequent developments wanted by the ducal government and the owners themselves as a consequence of the role the city acquired in 1598 when it became the Este capital and the seat of the court.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"title-evidenza\">Terra del Sole<\/span><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_59869\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-59869\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-59869\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travelemiliaromagna.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/terra_del_sole_castrocaro_terme.jpg\" alt=\"Terra del Sole (Castrocaro Terme)\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.travelemiliaromagna.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/terra_del_sole_castrocaro_terme.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.travelemiliaromagna.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/terra_del_sole_castrocaro_terme-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.travelemiliaromagna.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/terra_del_sole_castrocaro_terme-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.travelemiliaromagna.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/terra_del_sole_castrocaro_terme-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-59869\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Terra del Sole (Castrocaro Terme) | Credit: romagnatoscanaturismo.it<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Built according to an accurate plan that was conceived to meet the territory\u2019s civil and military needs, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/emiliaromagnaturismo.it\/en\/towns\/terra-del-sole\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Terra del Sole<\/a><\/strong> represents <strong>the pinnacle of urban planning in the mid-Renaissance period<\/strong> with its characteristic starry plan.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Built-in an area bordering with Tuscany<\/strong> (foundation date: 8 December 1564), <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cosimo_I_de%27_Medici,_Grand_Duke_of_Tuscany\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cosimo de\u2019 Medici<\/a> himself was committed to design and build the new city. He made the most of the military and administrative experience he gained in his Grand duchy and decided upon how to realize the project, with the help of the architect chosen for this challenge (Baldassarre Lanci, Giovanni Camerini, Bernardo Buontalenti, and Simone Genga).<\/p>\n<p><strong>The outcome of this task<\/strong>, which visitors can still see today with their own eyes, <strong>was a real and perfectly organized \u2018Fortress City\u2019<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The built-up area included: a 13-meter-high city wall; <strong>two castles <\/strong>&#8211; the castle of the Artillery Captain in defence of the Tuscan village and the one of the Governor that had to protect the Roman one were built. Moreover, the<strong> central Piazza d\u2019Armi<\/strong> (also called Maggiore) was meant to be the real urban hub according to the people-oriented city projected by Francesco di Giorgio Martini.<\/p>\n<p>Lastly, the project included two city buildings of major importance, one in front of the other, overlooking the piazza &#8211; the<strong> Church Santa Reparata<\/strong> and the<strong> Commissary Castle<\/strong> (or Pretorio Palace), as to highlight that the two powers presided over the city\u2019s life.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Antique world and the Middle Ages have always dreamt of building the ideal city \u2013 or rather theorized settlements, whose urban arrangement with its streets and palaces were based on functional and rational principles under the aegis of philosophy.
