The castle played a significant role in the country&#8217;s defense against the barbarian hordes since the year 1000, even though the date is not firmly established by evidence.<\/p>\n<p>The people of Bologna conquered and destroyed the castle in 1247, then brought what was left of it to the nearby town of <a href=\"https:\/\/emiliaromagnaturismo.it\/en\/towns\/monteveglio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Monteveglio<\/a> to build a tower for their officials. The Castle was then rebuilt by Azzo VIII d&#8217;Este between the end of 1200 and the beginning of 1300. Its current Renaissance style is due to Giovanni II Bentivoglio, who transformed the castle into a country&#8217;s summer residence.<\/p>\n<p>Over the centuries, the building has served different functions: the seat of the so-called Capitanato della Montagna, a prison (poet Ugo Foscolo was imprisoned here in 1799), a theatre, a barracks, a school, and even a private residence.<br \/>\nToday it also hosts the \u201cArsenio Crespellani Civic Archaeological Museum, which houses findings dating back to the period from the Mesolithic to Renaissance and coming from the Samoggia, Lavino, and Reno valley.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_21034\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 1090px;\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_21034\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21034\" style=\"width: 1080px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21034 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travelemiliaromagna.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Rocca-di-Bazzano-Valsamoggia-BO-Ph.-@dronemilia_aerialphotos-via-Instagram-1.jpg\" alt=\"Rocca di Bazzano, Valsamoggia (BO) Ph. @dronemilia_aerialphotos via Instagram\" width=\"1080\" height=\"698\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-21034\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bentivoglio Fortress in Bazzano, Valsamoggia (BO) | Ph. @dronemilia_aerialphotos via Instagram<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/castelliemiliaromagna.it\/en\/s\/dozza\/6019-rocca_di_dozza\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Sforza Fortress in Dozza<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>The Castle, dating back to the Middle Ages, is a monumental complex which Caterina Sforza turned into a real fortified castle and then a residence during the Renaissance.<br \/>\nDue to its strategic position, on the border between <a href=\"https:\/\/emiliaromagnaturismo.it\/en\/towns\/bologna\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bologna<\/a> (Emilia) and Romagna, many battles have been fought over it throughout the centuries. The current layout of the building (courtyards, vestibule, entrance hall, and stairs) and the arrangement of the main floor dates back to the Campeggi family, who mainly used the castle for diplomatic engagements and lived there until 1960.<br \/>\nThe castle now looks like a house-museum and offers a guided tour divided into three different paths: the medieval and renaissance Castle, the renaissance Residence, and the 18th-century Residence. Last but not least, it also hosts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.enotecaemiliaromagna.it\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Regional Enoteca<\/a>, one of the cornerstones of Emilia-Romagna\u2019s food and wine tradition.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10525\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 1214px;\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_10525\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10525\" style=\"width: 1204px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-10525 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travelemiliaromagna.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/pbo2015dozzarocca_di_dozzaw7853simona_buccolieri.jpg\" alt=\"Sforza Fortress in Dozza (BO) | Ph.
