The octagonal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.piazzaduomoparma.com\/en\/battistero\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Battistero<\/a> (Baptistry) soars skyward in a Romanesque-Gothic marriage of pink marble and Medieval might. Off its southern flank, the 63m-high bell tower of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.piazzaduomoparma.com\/en\/cattedrale\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Duomo<\/a> (main cathedral), hugs the main nave like a child clinging to papa.<\/p>\n<p>As one ambles about the square for that ideal, Instagrammable angle, the realization comes on fast and furious: without a wide-angle lens or other professional trickery, these two showcases of 12<span class=\"s1\"><sup>th<\/sup><\/span> Century mastery cannot easily be corralled into a money shot.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #dd9933;\"><strong>Such is <a href=\"https:\/\/emiliaromagnaturismo.it\/en\/towns\/parma?utm_source=TER&amp;utm_medium=post\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Parma<\/a>, recognized the world over for ham and cheese, but harboring more masterpieces than could possibly fit in a single frame.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XFl0FuwTXAg\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Not only its food, but its music<\/strong> (<span style=\"color: #dd9933;\">Arturo Toscanini<\/span> was from here, <span style=\"color: #dd9933;\">Giuseppe Verdi<\/span> hails from nearby <a href=\"https:\/\/emiliaromagnaturismo.it\/en\/towns\/busseto?utm_source=TER&amp;utm_medium=post\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Busseto<\/a> and Parma hosts a world-renown <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teatroregioparma.it\/en\/homepage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Verdi Festival<\/a> every September\/October) <strong>and its arts<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A three-day city break<\/strong> here reaps a cavalcade of rewards, from exquisite local delicacies such as <a href=\"https:\/\/emiliaromagnaturismo.it\/en\/food-valley\/dop-igp-products\/pdo-prosciutto-di-parma?utm_source=TER&amp;utm_medium=post\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>prosciutto di Parma<\/i><\/a> to absolute masterworks such as <span style=\"color: #dd9933;\">Leonardo da Vinci&#8217;s &#8220;La Scapigliata&#8221;<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>On your first day<\/strong>, wander Parma&#8217;s compact <i>Centro Storico<\/i>, taking in such delights such as the aforementioned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parmawelcome.it\/en\/place\/discover-parma\/what-to-see\/churches\/cathedral\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Duomo<\/a>, <strong>one of the finest examples of Romanesque architecture in Italy<\/strong>; and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parmawelcome.it\/en\/place\/discover-parma\/what-to-see\/churches\/baptistery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Battistero<\/a>, constructed in 1196 towing the line between two extraordinary architectural eras: Romanesque and Gothic.<br \/>\nThe <strong>Byzantine style 13<sup>th<\/sup> century frescos<\/strong> that adorn its interiors are the stuff of tear-inspiring beauty.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15514\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15514\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-15514 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travelemiliaromagna.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Parma-duomo-1.jpg\" alt=\"Parma Cathedral\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15514\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Piazza Duomo, Parma | Ph. \u00a9 acri.it<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After lunching on piles of plated <i>prosciutto di Parma<\/i> and <a href=\"https:\/\/emiliaromagnaturismo.it\/en\/food-valley\/dop-igp-products\/pdo-parmigiano-reggiano?utm_source=TER&amp;utm_medium=post\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>Parmigiano-Reggiano<\/i><\/a> chased with a lively <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.enotecaemiliaromagna.it\/en\/wines-and-wineries\/regional-wines\/lambrusco\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lambrusco<\/a><\/em> (don&#8217;t worry, you won&#8217;t have trouble finding it), the entire afternoon should be devoted to <em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/complessopilotta.it\/en\/national-gallery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Galleria Nazionale<\/a><\/strong><\/em>, home to Parma&#8217;s principle art collection as well as the breathtaking Renaissance\u00a0<strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/complessopilotta.it\/en\/the-farnese-theatre\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Teatro Farnese<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, almost entirely constructed of wood and rebuilt in the 1950&#8217;s after suffering substantial damage from WWII bombing raids.<br \/>\nBoth are located in the monumental museum complex at <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/complessopilotta.it\/en\/welcome\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Complesso Monumentale della Pilotta<\/em><\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21104\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21104\" style=\"width: 1600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21104 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travelemiliaromagna.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Palazzo-della-Pilotta-Ph.-ParmaWelcome.jpg\" alt=\"Pilotta Palace Ph. ParmaWelcome<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>At the former, alongside works by <span style=\"color: #dd9933;\">Correggio, Parmigianino, Fra Angelico, and Canaletto<\/span>, you&#8217;ll encounter one of Italy&#8217;s unapparelled masterpieces.<\/p>\n<p>Think of it this way: inside the Lourve in Paris, there sits Mona Lisa, unbeknownst to nobody and often obscured by throngs of visitors crowding up against her resting place.<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s hectic and congested; but inside Galleria Nazionale, you&#8217;ll wander aimlessly around uncrowded works of art before suddenly stumbling upon <strong>Leonardo&#8217;s &#8220;La Scapigliata&#8221;<\/strong>, a sky-high Renaissance oil painting on wood featuring the forlorn downward gaze of an unknown woman.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #dd9933;\"><strong>&#8220;La Scapigliata&#8221; employs a similar style and technique as Mona Lisa (namely <em>sfumato<\/em>) \u2013 but it can be admired without the hordes of looky-loos.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21103\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21103\" style=\"width: 1230px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21103 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travelemiliaromagna.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Leonardo-da-Vincis-La-Scapigliata.jpg\" alt=\"Leonardo da Vinci's La Scapigliata\" width=\"1230\" height=\"1600\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-21103\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Leonardo da Vinci&#8217;s La Scapigliata<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The whole scene is a perfect example of the city\u2019s attitude towards visitors: <strong>Parma offers its best without shouting<\/strong>, a quintessential tenet of slow tourism. Speaking of slow, Parma counts itself as a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.parmacityofgastronomy.it\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy<\/a>, too.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>On your second day<\/strong>, a full devotion to the <strong>culinary arts<\/strong> is in order. As home to one of Italy highest concentrations of protected regional products, your stomach has its work cut out for it: <i>Prosciutto di Parma<\/i> (Parma ham), <i>Parmigiano Reggiano<\/i> (the only authentic Parmesan Cheese), <a href=\"https:\/\/emiliaromagnaturismo.it\/en\/food-valley\/dop-igp-products\/pdo-culatello-di-zibello?utm_source=TER&amp;utm_medium=post\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>Culatello di Zibello<\/i><\/a> (the heart of Prosciutto and the king of hams), <a href=\"https:\/\/emiliaromagnaturismo.it\/en\/food-valley\/dop-igp-products\/pgi-fungo-di-borgotaro?utm_source=TER&amp;utm_medium=post\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>Fungo di Borgotaro<\/i><\/a> (Borgotaro mushrooms), <a href=\"https:\/\/emiliaromagnaturismo.it\/en\/food-valley\/dop-igp-products\/pgi-coppa-di-parma?utm_source=TER&amp;utm_medium=post\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>Coppa di Parma<\/i><\/a> (cured salume) and <a href=\"https:\/\/emiliaromagnaturismo.it\/en\/food-valley\/wines\/pdo-colli-di-parma-wines?utm_source=TER&amp;utm_medium=post\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>Vini Colli di Parma<\/i><\/a> (wine from the Parma hills) all await.<\/p>\n<p><strong>There are numerous day tours to local producers available<\/strong>, where you can take a closer look into the artisanal processes used to produce these unmissable local delicacies and, of course, sample the goods!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11804\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11804\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-11804 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travelemiliaromagna.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Emilia-Romagna-759-1.jpg\" alt=\"Parmigiano Reggiano | Photo \u00a9 Lola Akinmade\" width=\"1200\" height=\"798\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11804\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Parmigiano Reggiano | Ph. \u00a9 Lola Akinmade<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>On the third day<\/strong>, it&#8217;s time to explore the remarkable <strong>countryside around Parma<\/strong>, where you can split your morning and afternoon between <strong>two downright astounding destinations<\/strong>. Around 20km south of Parma at <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.castellidelducato.it\/castellidelducato\/castello.asp?el=castello-di-torrechiara\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Castello di Torrechiara<\/a><\/strong> (\u20ac5), one of Italy&#8217;s most storybook castles awaits, a resounding example of fortified living that once served as the home of Count Pier Maria II de&#8217; Rossi, who holed up here with his lover, Bianca Pellegrini, in the 15<sup>th<\/sup> century.<\/p>\n<p>Outside, its five massive square towers flank one of Italy&#8217;s best-preserved castles; inside, its <strong>15<sup>th<\/sup> and 16<sup>th<\/sup> century frescos equally intact<\/strong>. And there are more where that comes from \u2013 the entire region is castle country, offering a fascinating array of options for fortress fanatics.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19671\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19671\" style=\"width: 1600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-19671 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travelemiliaromagna.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Langhirano-PR-Castello-di-Torrechiara-Ph.-Marco-Tommesani-1.jpg\" alt=\"Langhirano (PR), Torrechiara Castle, Ph. Clandestinely carved among Emilian countryside is the <strong>world&#8217;s largest maze, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.labirintodifrancomariaricci.it\/en\/labirinto-masone\/home-en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Labirinto della Masone<\/a><\/strong>, the brainchild of late magazine mogul Franco Maria Ricci, who passed away in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>The famed art publisher started what was once called the most beautiful art magazine in the world (<i>FMR<\/i>) before turning his attention to a lifelong dream to create a labyrinth.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17818\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17818\" style=\"width: 1080px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-17818 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travelemiliaromagna.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/04-Labirinto-della-Masone-Fontanellato-Ph.@j84c-via-Instagram-1.jpg\" alt=\"Labirinto della Masone, Fontanellato | Ph.@j84c via Instagram\" width=\"1080\" height=\"1349\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17818\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Labirinto della Masone, Fontanellato | Ph.@j84c via Instagram<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>If you&#8217;re toting children, hang on tight \u2013 you&#8217;ll never see them again if they set off in this elaborate, 7-hectare bamboo maze without you!
